How to prepare my Classic Car for export?

Preparing Your Classic Car for Export

It’s important to prepare your classic car for shipping in order to minimize potential problems during the transit. Your vehicle should be serviced ahead of time so that you can be sure it will run and stop when appropriate during the move. You or your dealer should check the fluids, battery charge and tire air pressure before transporting.. If your classic car does not run, please make sure the mover knows about this upfront to be able to prepare the right equipment to handle the shipping.

If you have any fluid leakage problems, they should be fixed prior to shipping. If it can’t be fixed, make sure the moving company knows about it in advance so that that the driver is aware of it and your classic doesn’t get placed above another car in transit, causing damage.

You will need to tie down or remove any bolted on accessories, including spoilers, mirrors, decals, etc.  Remove or lower any antennas as necessary.  Disable your car alarm to prevent it from going off by accident during shipping.

Remove any items from the classic car prior to shipping. You can have a spare tire and a jack in the car if necessary.

You will have to provide the moving company with keys, so make sure you have a spare set for yourself.

Finally, you can only have a quarter tank of gas or less in the car for shipping. If there is more gas in the tank, the moving company will not ship it.

What license is required from shipping company?

Shipping companies’ licence

Before you hire an international transportation company, you should check if they are fully licensed and bonded.

There are two (2) different types of  licenses granted by the FMC (Federal Maritime Commission).

One is the non-vessel operating common carrier (“NVOCC”) license and the other is the ocean freight forwarder (“forwarder”) license.  The first grands a right to issue the most important transportation document – called a bill of lading and. This licence allows to look for allocation on vessels, book space and represent you in process of export or import customs clearance. Second,  a freightforwarding licence allows a copany to represent you as a broker, however still needs NVOCC to prepare shipping documents.

You can either request a copy of licence before you sign a contract or simply to to FMC web site and check if a company has a valid licence at http://www2.fmc.gov/oti/OTIList_NVO_TradeNames.aspx
