How to prepare my Classic Car for export?

Preparing Your Classic Car for Export

It’s important to prepare your classic car for shipping in order to minimize potential problems during the transit. Your vehicle should be serviced ahead of time so that you can be sure it will run and stop when appropriate during the move. You or your dealer should check the fluids, battery charge and tire air pressure before transporting.. If your classic car does not run, please make sure the mover knows about this upfront to be able to prepare the right equipment to handle the shipping.

If you have any fluid leakage problems, they should be fixed prior to shipping. If it can’t be fixed, make sure the moving company knows about it in advance so that that the driver is aware of it and your classic doesn’t get placed above another car in transit, causing damage.

You will need to tie down or remove any bolted on accessories, including spoilers, mirrors, decals, etc.  Remove or lower any antennas as necessary.  Disable your car alarm to prevent it from going off by accident during shipping.

Remove any items from the classic car prior to shipping. You can have a spare tire and a jack in the car if necessary.

You will have to provide the moving company with keys, so make sure you have a spare set for yourself.

Finally, you can only have a quarter tank of gas or less in the car for shipping. If there is more gas in the tank, the moving company will not ship it.

How to understand a car shipping quote

How to choose car shipping service from quotes?

Most of us wonder how to choose the most adequate service for shipping a car overseas. Lets say we already collected many rates online, we called a few companies, got some tips. What’s next?

Now its the moment to analyze and see what we truly want and what our budget is to get where we would feel comfortable. Is “cheap” always bad? Is expensive always a rip off? Should I only consider the middle price offers to eliminate risks?

First, lets analyze quotes and divide them by either RORO (ferry) service or containerized.

Upon collection of RORO providers only, we should analyze them by costs, transits and also make sure we understand what the rate covers. Booking a space on the vessel only – means we need to meet a US customs officer and present the paperwork given by a shipping company to get a proper stamp  – necessary to get on board. Booking a door pick up means most likely the trucker will or should take care of it. Accepting the lowest RORO rate may also mean you will be given only a limited attention – in case you need directions, guidelines or a taxi service back to the airport, you may not be able to get that customer service.

Lets focus on usually higher rates – containerized. This is also called enclosed carrier. If you plan on having some items left in a vehicle or your vehicle has mechanical problems  make sure you ask for a containerized service, this in most scenarios gives you that possibility. Usually the cheapest rates out there are based on loading 4 vehicles in a container with a double ramp. In most cases this is a safe way to go but  it certainly slows the service down if the container is not full since your vehicle would have to wait for all 4 vehicles to be ready. Depending on your budget – you can request half a container, cover the extra costs of lost space and ensure there is no other vehicle above or underneath your beloved car.  So paying extra bucks for having only 3 or 2 cars in a container pays off – its highly recommended to check that with the shipping company.

Rates are also subject to competitiveness – some companies enjoy the advantage of better rates then others so in such case “good price” is also an inexpensive one. Some higher quotes could also result from  a company trying to make large margins on first time inexperienced shipper. So how we should choose after all?

Rely on these 2 factors:

  • reputation – ask for references, individual clients, dealers etc, agents
  • feeling and comfort you may experience meeting a representative in person.

To summarize, choosing suitable service from quotes is a challenge. With a few tips, it looks much easier.
